Analysis of Ender's Game (2013) theatrical trailers
The official theatrical trailers for the 2013 science-fiction film Ender’s Game exhibit the use of conventional sci-fi narrative tropes, including; space exploration, alien invasion, potential decimation of the human population, the search for Earth’s saviour and the promise of fame and legacy for said saviour. The two trailers incorporate themes of developing masculinity, by demonstrating the creation of a Bildungsroman narrative in which a young, American male comes of age amidst a precarious series of events that encourage maturation and individual progression. Furthermore, the “International Fleet” logo at the end of the first trailer echoes American military institutions in its design and political connotations. Indeed the original novel, on which the film is based, includes historical realities such as the fall of the USSR and the end of the Cold War, thus the narrative centres around an Americanised military-industrial microcosm.
